The Uttarakhand High Court heard a public interest litigation filed against stray cattle being abandoned on the roads in Haldwani city and other places on Monday. The matter was heard by the division bench of acting chief justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and justice Vivek Bharti Sharma. The hearing will continue on Tuesday.
During the hearing on Monday, the Haldwani municipal commissioner Pankaj Upadhyaya appeared in the court. He informed that the Municipal Corporation of Haldwan is picking up five to six stray cattle on a daily basis. However, now the municipal corporation has run out of space to shelter these abandoned stray cattle. He further informed that in 2019 the number of stray cattle in the city was more than 600, adding that the stray cattle population has not been counted after 2019. The population of stray cattle has increased considerably at present and there are no proper arrangements to shelter these cattle. There is no space left now even in private cowsheds, he added.
According to the case details, Haldwani resident advocate Chandrashekhar Joshi had filed the PIL in the High Court stating that a number of accidents are taking place on the roads in Haldwani city and other roads in the State due to stray cattle. The petitioner has sought that the stray animals should be removed from the roads and sent to safe locations.
