The Uttarakhand police will soon send a proposal to the State government to establish a separate battalion of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for the Kumaon range. This is the vision of the director general of police Abhinav Kumar to have a separate unit in Kumaon to tackle accidents and disaster related mishaps, the Additional Director General of Police (Crime, Law and Order) AP Anshuman said.
The SDRF is mainly active in the Garhwal region due to various factors like all Char Dham shrines are situated there and most of the disaster-vulnerable districts fall under this region too. Tourism is also increasing in the Kumaon region with time. The number of pilgrims is also expected to increase in the region in the near future as the ancient temples of Kumaon are being developed under the Manas Khand Mandir Mala programme.
Anshuman said that the number of accidents has increased in the State including in the Kumaon region and a separate dedicated SDRF battalion will be able to provide quick response in critical conditions. The department is currently working on drafting the proposal for forming a separate SDRF battalion which will be sent soon to the State government, he added.
