The Transport department will suspend the driving license for three months of those found driving vehicles on the wrong side of the road. The enforcement teams of the department will also send the cases against such offenders to court where action will be taken against them accordingly. The department issued the order after two people died in an accident in the Doiwala area on May 30 due to riding on the wrong side of the road. The regional transport officer (Enforcement) of the Dehradun division Shailesh Tiwari said that the department has already issued over 160 challans to people driving on the wrong side of the road since Friday on Rajpur Road, Sahastradhara Road, Saharanpur Road, Haridwar Bypass, Harrawala, Jogiwala and Sahastradhara Road, among others. The department is gearing up to suspend the license of these drivers and will send cases against them to the court too, the RTO said. He stated that driving on the wrong side of the road is one of the major causes of road accidents, especially in cities. He said that people tend to drive on the wrong side to avoid a few metre long stretches on roads to save a few seconds which often leads to fatal accidents, especially on main roads and highways. The department also recently inspected the site in Dehradun where two people died in the accident on May 30 due to the same reason. “I inspected the site with the officials concerned of Traffic police, Public Works Department and National Highways. We checked the site and made necessary recommendations to ensure such accidents do not occur there again. The police and enforcement teams will also conduct regular checks there. However it is important for drivers to understand and follow basic traffic rules as it often turns out to be fatal not just for drivers but for several other people on the road,” he said.
