The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal asked the police in Haridwar to take strict action in the case of an Emergency Medical Officer (EMO) at the Haridwar District Hospital who has been accused of molesting an intern. Kandwal said that she came to know of the incident recently and contacted the Haridwar police to enquire about the matter. She was informed by the police that the intern’s father had filed a complaint against the EMO at the police station. The police have initiated an investigation based on the complaint. According to the information received, the intern’s father mentioned in the complaint that his daughter has been undergoing training at the district hospital since December 2023. It was reported that on Wednesday evening at about 7:30 PM, Dr Anas Zahid, the EMO at the district hospital, called the female to a separate duty room and closed the door, she added.
Kandwal further stated that the police had informed her that her daughter had told them that Zahid held her in his arms and began to assault her while engaging in indecent behaviour. Despite her protests, Zahid continued his actions, threatening her daughter, who kept trying to leave the room. When her father called out to her, Zahid became alarmed upon realising the call was from her father. Subsequently, the daughter managed to open the door, return home in tears, and disclose the entire incident, she added.
She further mentioned that the police informed her that following the complaint, they had initiated legal proceedings by filing a case against the accused doctor according to the relevant legal provisions. In view of this, she directed the police to thoroughly investigate the matter and promptly take stringent actions against the accused.
Notably, Kandwal has also spoken to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Haridwar district, Dr Manish Dutt and directed him to take strict action in this matter.
