In order to promote women’s participation in the public transport sector, the Transport department is prioritising issuing new permits for CNG-fuelled auto rickshaws for women in Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar. The initiative aims to increase women’s representation in a traditionally male-dominated field while promoting cleaner transportation options.
The department has already begun accepting applications for 250 permits for CNG-fueled auto rickshaws in Dehradun, with December 30 as the last date to apply, according to regional transport officer (Administration) of the Dehradun division Sunil Sharma. Highlighting the financial benefits of the scheme, Sharma stated that while a single permit for an auto rickshaw typically costs around Rs four lakh, these permits will be available for approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. “This is a golden opportunity, especially for women, to enter the public transport sector. We are also prepared to assist women applicants with financial aid to help them purchase the vehicles,” Sharma said.
He stated that applicants must purchase the CNG-fuelled auto rickshaw within three months of applying for the permit. For instance, those in Dehradun will have until March to complete their purchase after applying for prmit by December 30. To qualify, applicants must be residents of Uttarakhand, over 18 years old and able to read and write clearly, he said. Sharma also encouraged interested candidates to visit room number 22 at the regional transport office in Dehradun, where officials will assist them in understanding the application process. “We are committed to supporting women throughout this process, as many face financial barriers when venturing into such initiatives,” he said. He further stated that the department’s plan to extend similar permits to Rishikesh and Haridwar underscores its commitment to empowering women across the region. He stated that increasing the number of women drivers in public transport has multifaceted benefits.
The RTO said that in addition to enhancing gender inclusivity, it promotes safer travel options for women and families, encourages tourists to explore the region with confidence and contributes to a more welcoming and progressive transportation ecosystem. “The initiative aligns with the broader objectives of the department to ensure sustainable development by promoting CNG-fuelled vehicles and creating more employment opportunities for women. With more participation of women, it is expected to reshape the public transport sector in Uttarakhand, making it more inclusive and environmentally friendly,” he said.
