Raturi reviews comprehensive plan to tackle Mussoorie’s traffic woes

PNS | DEHRADUN

Chief secretary Radha Raturi conducted a review meeting with the Dehradun district administration and the police to discuss an action plan aimed at addressing Mussoorie’s persistent traffic challenges. The officials discussed the introduction of shuttle services and golf carts, which will connect parking areas on the outskirts of Mussoorie to the main city. The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal informed Raturi that the identified locations for satellite parking include 28 strategically chosen spots, including Hathipaon.

These parking areas aim to reduce the inflow of private vehicles into the city, thereby easing congestion and preserving the natural beauty of Mussoorie. Once operational, the initial shuttle route will connect Kincraig to Picture Palace and Gandhi Chowk. This service will be active particularly during the peak tourist season, offering a seamless travel option for visitors. The plan also involves training local rickshaw drivers to operate these services, thereby boosting local employment opportunities and supporting the local economy.

At Hathipaon Bend, satellite parking facilities will be enhanced with police booths, shuttle booths, proper lighting, security measures, and other public amenities. Bansal said that the coordination with local taxi operators will ensure the smooth implementation of services and the creation of additional job opportunities.

The action plan will also include the development of a mobile application to provide real-time updates on parking availability, ensuring a hassle-free experience for visitors, as per the officials. Raturi directed a comprehensive publicity campaign through various channels to promote the use of these shuttle services. She also instructed the municipal officials to arrange adequate cattle catchers in both Dehradun and Mussoorie to tackle the issue of stray animals disrupting traffic. Raturi asked officials to ensure proper implementation of the traffic management plan to address the challenges posed by the influx of tourists and the excessive use of private vehicles.
