Voting marked by complaints of missing names in voter lists

Large number of people complained about the absence of their names in the voter list on the day of polling of the urban local bodies (ULB) in Dehradun on Thursday. Many people complained that the names of all the members of their family were missing from the voter list due to which they missed the opportunity to take part in the election process. Reports of complaints of irregularities in the voter list came from all parts of the State. Similarly, in many polling booths the voters complained that someone else had cast their votes.

 Phool Singh (74), a resident of ward number 55 of Dehradun complained that he was told by the polling officer that his vote had been cast. “I came to the booth at around 9:15 AM but was aghast to know that someone else had cast my vote,’’ he said.

 Colonel (retd) NS Rawat, a resident of Defence Colony complained that his name and the name of his wife were missing from the voter list.

The names of the senior physician KC Pant and his family were also missing from the voters list.

In ward number 58, Neelam Khanna, Arti, Pramod Kumar  and Sanju Bagwadi complained that their names were not there in the voter list. All of them claimed that they had exercised their franchise in the Assembly elections of 2022 and in the Lok Sabha elections held in 2024.  

Chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni also complained that the names of all members of her family were absent from the voter list.

Nautiyal requests HC to halt counting of votes in ULB polls

DEHRADUN : The founder of Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation, Anoop Nautiyal has requested the Uttarakhand High Court to take suo moto cognisance of the absence of the names of large numbers of people from the voter list in the ULB elections.  In a statement Nautiyal requested the HC to halt the process of the counting of votes for the ULB polls scheduled on January 25. He said that the absence of such a large number of people from the voter list is a serious issue. He said that the constitutional rights of the people should not be compromised and the sanctity of the election process should be maintained. Nautiyal also criticised the State Election Commission for the poor quality of its official website.
