The locals have high hopes with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Harsil and Mukhwa in Uttarkashi on Thursday. They are considering it as a significant moment for them and expect that the PM’s visit will give a potential boost to tourism, infrastructure and economic development in the area. Situated along the Bhagirathi River, Harsil is known for its scenic beauty while Mukhwa serves as the winter abode of Goddess Ganga. The historical and spiritual significance of the area attracts devotees from across the country. Modi’s visit is expected to bring national and international attention to the region, potentially enhancing its tourism prospects. Locals opined that the PM’s arrival will promote winter tourism and develop religious and cultural tourism in nearby villages. They believe that improved facilities will create employment opportunities and strengthen the local economy. Given the region’s remote location, better roads, healthcare, education and digital connectivity are essential needs that residents expect to be addressed. There is also a demand to designate Harsil and surrounding areas as special tourism zones. The locals opined that the region’s meadows can be developed for winter and adventure tourism, attracting trekkers and adventure seekers. Since Harsil is known for its apples and Taknaur is famous for potatoes and rajma, farmers also seek support in modern agricultural techniques and better market access to increase their earnings. Encouragement of organic farming through targeted schemes could further boost local agriculture. Residents also seek relaxation in eco-sensitive zone regulations to restart stalled hydroelectric projects. This could help utilise natural resources effectively and create job opportunities for the youth. The locals believed that Modi’s visit will open new possibilities for the future of the area.
