Edu dept terminates teacher following sexual harassment complaint

 Taking a stern note of the complaint of sexual harassment levelled against a guest teacher in Chamoli district, the Education department has terminated the service of the accused teacher.

Accusation of sexual harassment and indecent behaviour have been levelled on Yunus Ansari, a guest lecturer of Political Science at Government Inter College, Gauna in Chamoli district. The parents of the students have complained about the behaviour and activities of Ansari recently. Acting on the complaint, the Education department has terminated the services of the accused teacher. The termination order was issued by the Principal of GIC Gauna on Monday.

The block education officer (BEO) of Dasholi block has also registered a case against the accused under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act at Police station Chamoli Kotwali. The Police have started an investigation in the case. 

The department officials informed that Yunus was appointed to the post of guest lecturer Political Sciences in 2015. Recently parents of the students accused him of sexual harassment of their wards following which the Principal of the school convened a meeting of the School Management Committee and Parents Association based on which a request to take stern action against the accused was made with the senior officers of the department.

 The chief education officer (CEO) Chamoli directed that the contract of the accused teacher should be cancelled with immediate effect. The CEO also directed the Principal of GIC Gauna to submit a written explanation within two days for showing laxity in the case.

Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the State government will not tolerate those involved in indiscipline, harassment and safety of the students. He said that the safety of the students is the top priority of the State government. Rawat said following the Chamoli incident the officers of the Education department have been asked to increase monitoring at school level and strengthen the safety protocol.
