MCD undertakes verification drive to expand property tax net

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Wednesday carried out a ward-wise verification drive to identify properties that were not covered under the property tax system. The exercise was part of the civic body’s ongoing efforts to strengthen revenue collection and expand the property tax base in the city.
During the drive, municipal teams physically verified 173 properties across different wards. Officials said that 36 properties were found to be outside the tax ambit and have now been brought under the property tax net. Notices have been issued to the concerned property owners, directing them to deposit their dues within the prescribed time, they added.
Officials said that the verification campaign is being conducted in phases and similar checks are expected to continue in other parts of the city in the coming days. The initiative aims to ensure that all eligible residential and commercial properties are included in the tax system and contribute to civic revenue.
The Corporation has also decided to keep its office open on March 26 to facilitate property tax payments. Property owners who deposit their dues on this date can avail a 20 per cent rebate, officials said. The civic body has appealed to residents to take advantage of the rebate and clear their pending dues on time.
Officials further informed that interest will be charged on unpaid property tax from April onwards as per the prescribed rules.
