The Nainital Dugdh Utpadak Sahakari Sangh Limited (NDUSSL) has expanded on Thursday its dairy network with the inauguration of its 702nd milk producing cooperative society at Sela village in the mountainous region. Inaugurating it, the chairman of the union, Mukesh Bora said that the cooperative movement has become a key pillar of economic empowerment in remote and mountainous areas. On its very first day of operations, the newly formed society collected 60 litres of milk, reflecting encouraging participation from local producers, he said while addressing a gathering of women dairy farmers, adding that the union has set a target of collecting 1.55 lakh litres of milk per day during the 2026–27 financial year. “The target will be achieved by setting up new cooperative societies, bringing more dairy farmers into the cooperative network and enhancing milk production,” he said.
Highlighting the growing role of women in the dairy sector, Bora said that nearly 40,000 milk producers are currently associated with the union, with around 75 per cent being women. “The women are actively involved in every stage of dairy operations, from livestock management to running cooperative societies, making them the driving force behind the region’s dairy growth,” he added.
