The murder of two ascetics at the Pathreshwar Mahadev Temple under Pathri police station jurisdictional limits of Haridwar district has created a stir in the area. The bodies of the two sadhus were buried in a pit dug in the forest near the temple. After receiving the information of the suspected double murders, the police went to the scene, exhumed the bodies and sent them for post-mortem. Preliminary investigations have cast suspicion on the temple’s chief priest, who has been absconding.
Police said that a temple attendant had alerted them of their disappearance for several days and feared something untoward might havedd happened to them. Following this, the station in-charge, Ravindra Singh arrived at the scene with a police team and forensic experts. During the investigation, a suspicious location in the forest near the temple was excavated, from where their bodies were recovered.
Prima facie, police believe that after the murders, the accused had dug a pit and buried the bodies to destroy evidence. “Vital evidence has been collected from the scene, and police are investigating several angles to determine the motive behind the murders,” Singh shared.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the SP (Rural) Shekhar Chandra Suyal arrived at the scene and took stock of the investigation. He stated that the police are investigating the matter seriously and things would be unravelled soon.
It is further learnt that several police teams are continuously raiding possible hideouts to arrest the absconding chief priest.
