To ensure the appropriate representation of female students in the student union elections for the academic session 2026-27 in Kumaun University and its affiliated colleges, 50 per cent posts will be reserved for them.
As per a letter issued by the Uttarakhand Government’s Higher Education Department, necessary action has been directed to reserve 50 per cent of the seats for female students in student union elections in state universities and affiliated colleges where the female student percentage is more than 66 per cent.
In compliance with the government’s directive, the executive council of Kumaun University granted approval. Notably, the student union elections for the current academic session 2026-27 will be held on September 29. The student union elections will include elections for the posts of president, vice-president (Boys), vice-president (Girls), secretary, joint secretary (Girls), treasurer (Girls) and cultural secretary.
Based on the recommendation of the committee constituted by the university, the student union constitution has been reviewed and it has also been recommended to constitute a high-level committee to establish a roster system for the representation of female students in the student union elections as per the government order from the upcoming academic session 2027-28. The registrar of the university, Prof Rajneesh Pandey said that as per the instructions of the government, the student union is taking necessary action to complete the election process as per the prescribed rules and timetable.
Meanwhile a joint meeting between the police administration and student leaders was held at the DSB campus of the university in Nainital regarding the upcoming student union elections. Officials from the dean of Student Welfare Department and the university administration were also present.
The SP (Crime), Jagdish Chandra told the student leaders that the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations must be strictly followed during the elections. Action will be taken against campaign expenditures exceeding the prescribed limit, use of caste-based or communal posters and banners, misuse of loudspeakers and interference of outsiders on campus. “Candidates violating these rules will be disqualified,” he said and added that no student or outsider would be allowed to enter the campus without a valid identity card during the elections.
