PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun
The long-pending permanent restoration of water supply schemes damaged during the 2025 monsoon is likely to gain momentum as the Central government has approved about Rs 112 crore for this purpose. Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) officers said that the funds would be released after the department submits a permanent reconstruction and recovery plan for damaged schemes.
Pertinently, every year during monsoon, water supply schemes in the State get damaged due to heavy rainfall, cloudbursts and landslides. Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) carries out temporary restoration during monsoon and takes up permanent restoration after monsoon with the budget received.
As per UJS sources, permanent restoration of the schemes damaged in the 2025 monsoon was being delayed due to the late arrival of the budget.
Sharing details, UJS secretary (Appraisal) Maneesh Semwal said that a total of 3,534 water supply schemes had been affected in 2025, including 183 urban and 3,351 rural schemes. The estimated cost of damage was about Rs 124.9 crore.
Earlier, Rs 20 crore was received from the government for permanent restoration of 954 schemes and Rs 14.05 crore from district magistrates for 821 schemes. “However, a substantial amount was still pending,” he said.
He further informed that recently, the Central government has approved Rs 112 crore for permanent restoration of affected schemes in 2025. “It has, however, sought submission of a permanent reconstruction and recovery plan for release of funds,” Semwal said.
He added that taking note of this, UJS has asked all its divisions operating across the State to submit details of a permanent recovery and reconstruction plan for restoring the damaged water supply schemes.
