The massive turnout at the ‘Char Saal Bemisaal’ programme commemorating completion of the Pushkar Singh Dhami government’s four years triggered huge traffic jams across Dehradun city up to Premnagar and beyond on Monday. Notably, the programme was organised at Parade Ground. Anticipating a huge gathering, the police had drawn up a traffic route plan a day before, but it seemed to have fallen flat on the ground. Traffic near Clock Tower kept crawling till afternoon, inconveniencing the commuters. Changes in the routes of Vikram auto rickshaw added to the road ordeal the people faced. The office goers were hit the most by the traffic remaining stuck long on the roads or moving at snail’s pace.
The police had already made arrangements for parking and city bus routes. Barricades were placed around Parade Ground and only VIP vehicles were allowed in some areas. The common people said they were baffled over the elaborate police plan having failed to yield the expected results on the ground. “We found it hard to get vehicles,” said one of the daily commuters. Those travelling in private vehicles were not spared too. “We got stuck on the road for a long time with vehicles standing bumper to bumper,” said another Doonite, adding that they expected the police to do better next time.
