At a time when Congress veteran and former chief minister Harish Rawat is striving to make a comeback using the various political cards with him, the Bharatiya Janata Party said that his use of his mother’s photo for political purposes was very unfortunate and the height of moral turpitude. BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Prasad Bhatt questioned why Rawat is afraid to face an investigation if he has done nothing wrong. Such dramatic politics will have neither a detriment to the investigation process nor public perception, he said.
Interacting with the media, Bhatt said that Rawat’s mother was a very gentle and respectable person. If he had followed her path, he wouldn’t have been implicated in corruption allegations. At a time when the past Congress government under Rawat as CM is being investigated for scams and government embezzlement, he is resorting to all sorts of political maneuvering. “Appearing before the ED with his late mother’s photo around his neck is merely an attempt to garner sympathy and divert public attention. The truth is, the people of the state have already seen on television that he gave license to the plunder of resources during his tenure as the chief minister,” he said.
He remarked that now, as the layers of corruption in the UKSSSC exams during Rawat’s tenure are being exposed and vast amounts of black money are being found in the possession of his close associates, he is unable to answer logically. The public abandoned him long ago and now even the Congress party is not supporting him. This is why he has invoked his late mother as a shield against corruption allegations. Using such a sacred and revered relationship as his mother for political gain is deeply saddening and insulting. If he had followed the path shown by his mother and his elders, he would not have become a partner in such crime, the BJP State chief said.
