A 40-year-old man accused of cheating people of around Rs 54.5 lakh was arrested by Dehradun police from Ludhiana, Punjab on Sunday. The accused had been absconding for several months and was wanted in two fraud cases registered at Rajpur police station.
The accused, Adarsh Veer Dhawan, allegedly took around Rs 45 lakh from a man and his associates after promising to rent out their vehicles. The complainant alleged that Dhawan neither returned the vehicles nor the money. He also allegedly threatened the complainant when he asked for his money and vehicles back.
In another case, Dhawan allegedly sold his car to a man for Rs 9.5 lakh. However, he allegedly did not transfer the vehicle to the buyer’s name and also did not return the money.
Both cases were registered at Rajpur police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said that the cases involved serious allegations of cheating and had been under investigation.
The Rajpur police also obtained an arrest warrant from the court after Dhawan remained absconding. A police team traced him through manual investigation and arrested him from a CSC centre in Ludhiana on Sunday. Further investigation into the cases is underway, police added.
