The Rajpur police have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly posing as an IPS officer and cheating people by promising government jobs and other official favours, officials said. The accused, identified as R Yashovardhan, is the son of a former chief secretary S Ramaswamy. He was arrested near CSI Tiraha on Mussoorie Road on Thursday following an investigation by the police.
The superintendent of police (City) Pramod Kumar said that their team had recovered five fake identity cards, eight fake visiting cards, 25 police and Army logos, three Army and paramilitary uniforms, three fake service ribbons, one wireless set and one laptop from his possession.
He further said that Yashovardhan had dreamed of becoming an IPS officer and had prepared for the UPSC examination for several years. However, after failing to clear the exam, he allegedly started pretending to be a senior government officer. “He introduced himself as an IPS officer, Army officer, RAW agent, CRPF officer and other senior officials to win people’s trust”, he said.
“Two FIRs were registered against him at Rajpur police station. The first case was registered after one Anshul Upadhyay complained that the accused had cheated him of Rs 15 lakh by promising to register a company in the name of his late mother. In another case, Anusha, a woman scientist, alleged that Yashovardhan had promised her a job as a data science consultant in the Ministry of Defence and took Rs 4.60 lakh from her.
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage, collected technical evidence and tracked the accused before arresting him. During questioning, he admitted that he had used fake identities, uniforms and visiting cards to influence people, police said. Police believe that he may have cheated several others in a similar manner. Further investigation is underway and police are trying to identify more victims of the alleged fraud, SP Kumar added.
