At a time when the functioning of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital has already been affected a bit due to protests by PG and intern doctors for the past few days, the situation became more challenging on Thursday when sanitation workers engaged through the Uttarakhand Purv Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL) boycotted work for half a day. The workers demanded equal pay for equal work and alleged misbehaviour by their supervisors.
GDMC hospital Safai Karmchari Sangh general secretary Vishnu Prasad said that on Thursday morning about 110 UPNL sanitation workers boycotted their work in the hospital. He alleged that two supervisors- Ranveer Singh and Prem Chand Ghildiyal, used to misbehave with them.
He further alleged that supervisors also use abusive language with staff. The matter was taken up with the authorities and the medical superintendent of the hospital but no action was taken, following which they boycotted work on Thursday. The workers who boycotted work are assigned duties at IPD and the two upper floors of Emergency, he said.
Prasad said that the boycott was for half a day only. After a few hours of the work boycott, the principal of GDMC hospital assured them that talks regarding equal pay for equal work are underway with the State administration and asked the workers to wait 10 days for this. Apart from this, supervisor Singh also apologised. Following this, the boycott was withdrawn and sanitation workers resumed duties.
