52.26 % voter turnout in by-election for Panchayat bodies: SEC

A total of 52.26 per cent voters participated in the by-election held on Thursday on the vacant positions of the three-tier Panchayat bodies in the State.
The secretary of State Election Commission, RK Goyal said that 30,368 voters out of 58,105 voters exercised their franchise in the by-election. He said that 47.73 per cent male and 57.05 per cent female voters took part in the voting which commenced at 8 AM on Thursday. The by-election was necessitated to fill the vacant posts in the three-tier Panchayati Raj bodies in 12 districts of the State- all the districts barring Haridwar. The elections for these bodies were held in July this year.
The SEC released notification to fill 32,985 vacant posts in the Panchayat bodies of the State on November 11. After the notification of the by elections, 27,221 candidates were elected unopposed. Voting for by -election to elect 321 candidates was held on November 20.
