As part of preparations for the Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027 in Haridwar, the city’s drinking water system is being revamped to meet long-term needs. New facilities are being developed in the Mela area to meet the increased drinking water demand during the upcoming religious congregation, while special attention is being paid to enhance the capacity of the existing water distribution system in the city. “This will directly benefit not only the local residents but also the devotees visiting Haridwar during the Mela,” said a senior district administration officer.
To improve the water distribution system in Haridwar city, various important works are being carried out by Jal Sansthan at a cost of Rs 9.69 crore. Among them, the work of laying new drinking water lines of about nine and a half kilometre length and replacement of old lines at a cost of Rs 5.61 crore is prominent.
The work of replacing drinking water lines and laying new lines is going on at a fast pace in the areas surrounding Sapt Rishi Road, Doodhdhari Chowk to Shantikunj, Brahmapuri-Mansa Devi Marg, Bilkeshwar Colony area and in Kankhal from Bengali Hospital to the police station.
The pumping system is also being strengthened. The restructuring of the Bhupatwala Pawan Dham pumping scheme has been completed, while the restructuring of the Primary School and Shyamalok pumping schemes is in its final stages.
The officers concerned informed that to strengthen the drinking water system in Haridwar city and meet the additional demand in the Kumbh Mela area, work is underway on 35 projects with Rs 29.39 crore being approved Construction of a 1,500 kiloliter overhead tank and two tube wells at Bairagi Camp is in its final stages.
Construction of five RCC infiltration wells in Laljiwala, Dakshdweep, Gaurishankar and Pantdweep is also in its final stages, claimed the officials, adding that the same of five tube wells in Dakshdweep, Bajriwala, Satidweep and the BHEL area is progressing rapidly. In addition, work is underway to develop and clean mini tube wells at seven locations across the Mela area.
Along with the development of new drinking water facilities, emphasis is also being placed on making the existing systems useful and efficient. Repair and maintenance work is underway on 10 drinking water supply schemes already constructed in the Mela area and the target is to complete them by next month.
Moreover, work is also underway on the replacement of the FGI pipeline and laying of the rising main pipeline. The officers said that the Mela administration is constantly monitoring the progress of all these works under the direction of the Mela officer Sonika.
