Police arrest absconding teacher for allegedly raping minor

Police arrested an absconding government school teacher from Nainital bus stand on Wednesday on charges of raping a minor girl in Chakrata, Dehradun district. The accused, Piyaram Joshi is a resident of Manjhgaon village in Chakrata and was employed as a teacher at the Government Primary School in the same area.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that a complaint was filed at Chakrata police station on April 13, by the victim’s brother, a resident of Chakrata. According to the complaint, the accused forcibly established physical relations with the complainant’s minor sister and threatened to kill her if she spoke about the incident.

The girl later attempted suicide by consuming pesticide. He said that based on the complaint, a case was registered under sections 64, 352 and 351(2) (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following the registration of the case, the SSP formed special teams to locate and arrest the accused. He said that Joshi had been evading arrest and changing locations to avoid being caught.

The police collected inputs through surveillance and local sources, which led them to Nainital, where he was arrested on Wednesday, he said
