The Vikasnagar police have arrested four Nepalese nationals on Monday in connection with the theft of gold and silver jewellery from a jewellery shop in Vikasnagar. Police said they recovered jewellery worth around five lakh rupees from them when they were preparing to flee to Nepal with the stolen jewellery.
The accused were identified as Naina Shahi alias Vinod, Deepak Kumar Thakur alias Bhotiya, Shankar Bahadur Shahi and Nishchal Yogi alias Ramesh. Police said that all four are residents of Nepal and allegedly worked as labourers in different states and carried out thefts and burglaries.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police, Pramendra Dobal said that the accused had been arrested from near Kulhal Highway bridge on the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border.
According to the police, the burglary took place on August 7 night. The shop owner found the jewellery missing when he opened the shop on August 9 and filed a complaint with Vikasnagar police.
Police said that the accused had posed as workers while conducting reconnaissance in different parts of Vikasnagar. They allegedly identified the jewellery shop as their target and broke its lock at night. After the theft, they travelled through Dehradun and Haridwar to reach Himachal Pradesh.
Police also recovered a fake Aadhaar card from one of the quartet. According to police, the accused used fake identity documents to obtain SIM cards before committing crimes and destroyed the SIM cards after committing the crimes.
Dobal said that some of the arrested accused had previously been jailed in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other states for theft and burglary cases, adding that one more accused, Bhim Bahadur Shahi, has been identified as wanted in the case. “The arrested accused named him during interrogation and efforts are underway to arrest him,” Dobal stated.
