Legacy waste sites are being cleared ahead of the monsoon

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has initiated the clearance of the city’s legacy waste dumping sites as part of a major sanitation and environmental safety initiative ahead of the monsoon.
The civic body officials said that the work is currently underway at Sheeshambada and Sahastradhara Road sites where the old dumping grounds that have been in use for several years are being removed. It had caused significant environmental damage due to the release of toxic substances into these sites and had significantly damaged the environment due to the release of toxic substances into the soil and air.
Speaking of this issue, the chief municipal Health officer Avinash Khanna noted that the municipal corporation has set a strict deadline for completing the installation of new waste-processing machinery before the onset of the rainy season. “The new machines are expected to facilitate scientific waste segregation, internal treatment and proper disposal, reducing environmental hazards considerably,” he commented.
He further said that the advanced techniques are being adopted, including biomining and bioremediation techniques. “All the waste will be processed through the trommel machines for proper screening and compostable material. Hazardous waste linked to industrial units will be handled strictly as per the prescribed guidelines and contractors using unsafe methods will be replaced,” he said.
The process also includes regular monitoring, audits and coordination with factories and plants that have tie-ups for waste treatment. Khanna said: “The legacy work details have been prepared to ensure efficient time management,” he stated.
Once the work of this legacy works is complete, the land will be used for public use under which parking facilities will be available, including green spaces. “Besides, other civic infrastructure work will be carried out after the regulatory approval,” he said and exuded confidence that the initiative would significantly enhance Dehradun’s sanitation standards and help reduce the environmental impact of sanitation waste to ensure cleaner and safer places for the residents.
