The cyber crime police officer Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) arrested a man from Pune, Maharashtra, for allegedly duping a Dehradun resident of Rs 17.1 lakh through a matrimony site and WhatsApp. The accused, identified as Ramesh Bhati, was wanted in a 2021 case registered at the cyber crime police station in Dehradun.

According to senior superintendent of police STF Navneet Singh Bhullar, the accused contacted the victim after he registered on Bharat Matrimony and introduced himself as an officer of a reputed company.

He persuaded the victim to invest in Aquadin Herbal Oil and powder business schemes and obtained her personal and banking details under the pretext of completing transactions. Using the information, he transferred Rs 17.1 lakh from her account to multiple accounts. During investigation, police traced his location through technical surveillance and arrested him on the basis of a non-bailable warrant issued earlier by the court.

A chargesheet had already been filed in the case after sufficient evidence was found, Bhullar said. He informed that Bhati used fake IDs, multiple mobile numbers and different bank accounts to commit fraud and avoid detection. He was produced before the Dehradun court for further proceedings under relevant sections of the IPC.

The SSP also appealed to the public not to fall for fake investment offers or unknown online opportunities and to verify the authenticity of websites before making transactions. He urged citizens to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or cyber crime helpline number 1930.
