The Nainital police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old man in Haldwani for allegedly posing as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer. Police recovered a fake IB identity card, fake documents, an air gun and a car fitted with a red-blue beacon and carrying a “Government of India” board.
The Nainital senior superintendent of police Manjunath TC said that the accused was identified as Mohammed Mohasib Khan, 24, a resident of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. During checking on September 12, police stopped a vehicle at Tikonia intersection. The vehicle was coming from the Kathgodam side. The car had a red-blue beacon and a government board.
“The driver introduced himself as an IB officer and showed police an identity card. When police asked about his post and appointment, he failed to provide satisfactory answers,” the SSP said.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a fake IB ID card, documents related to the agency, an air gun resembling a pistol, the beacon and the government board. During questioning, Khan reportedly told police that he kept the air gun to create an impression and exert influence. Police said that their preliminary investigation indicated that he had been using fake documents to present himself as an IB officer. An FIR was registered at Haldwani police station under relevant sections and Khan was arrested. The vehicle was seized under the Motor Vehicles Act. Police are also checking his criminal history.
