As in various parts of the State, the weather fluctuated considerably in the hill station of Nainital on Sunday. In the morning before afternoon, it had become nearly unbearable to sit in the sun while mist and fog was witnessed in the post-afternoon period. However, comparatively colder weather is being witnessed here during the early morning and after sunset. On the other hand, the rising popularity of fireworks especially during Deepawali in the mountainous regions is contributing to a rise in air pollution, experts said.
The advent of Sunday was greeted by sunny weather in the morning as the skies appeared clear. However, mist and fog were witnessed a few hours later and the cold had set in by the time evening arrived, forcing people to wear woollens and other warm clothing. A number of tourists were seen buying woollens and other warm clothing at the Pant Park, Bhotiya Bazaar, Mall Road and Bada Bazaar. According to the GIC weather centre, the minimum temperature in Nainital on Sunday was 13 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, a rise in the bursting of fireworks has been witnessed during the nights in recent days due to the Deepawali festivities. A thin layer of smog was witnessed in the city on Sunday too. The fireworks burst in the city on Saturday night left the hill station with smog on the following day. Many people have been complaining of headaches due to air pollution in recent days. Senior physician at the BD Pande district hospital, Dr Mahiman Singh Dugtal said that headaches and burning sensation in the eyes are common issues caused by air pollution. Those suffering from cardiac issues should observe extra precautions, he added. Senior scientist at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Narendra Singh said that the level of air pollution in Nainital was more than double the normal level on Sunday. It will take about two to four days for the air to clear, he added.
