NHAI to install only rumble strips at Lachhiwala toll plaza

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will only install rumble strips, not speed breakers, following the tragic accident at the Lachhiwala toll plaza on March 24 that resulted in two deaths. The officials stated that on the day of the accident, a team of senior officials from the police, Transport department and NHAI conducted a joint inspection of the site. The assessment aimed to identify safety concerns and implement immediate measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The inspection revealed that faded lane markings were causing difficulties for drivers in identifying designated lanes, leading to safety hazards. The RTO recommended increasing the number of rumble strips and speed breakers on both sides of the toll plaza to control vehicle speed effectively.

The RTO submitted these recommendations to the Dehradun district road safety committee, chaired by district magistrate Savin Bansal. They informed that during its meeting on March 27, the committee instructed authorities to construct speed breakers immediately. However, the officials said that as per NHAI regulations, speed breakers are not permitted on highways due to the risk they pose to high-speed vehicles.

Considering this, the NHAI has decided to install low-height rumble strips near the toll plaza to enhance road safety while adhering to highway norms.
