Police nab two criminals after gunfight in Dehradun

Police arrested two criminals after a late-night encounter under Operation Prahar in the Vasant Vihar area on Saturday night. One accused was injured and later taken to the hospital for treatment. The police recovered two illegal country-made pistols, live and empty cartridges, and the scooter used in the incident. 

The main accused, Abdullah, is said to be a habitual criminal with several cases registered against him in Saharanpur, Meerut and Ghaziabad. The second accused was identified as Shahnawaz Salmani.

According to the police, the incident took place on the night of April 25 during a checking drive at the Harbanswala barrier. Police tried to stop a blue scooter without a number plate carrying two men, but they did not stop and tried to escape towards the tea estate. When the police chased them, the suspects opened fire. In self-defense, the police also fired, in which one accused was injured. 

Both the accused were later caught by the police. The injured man was taken to the hospital for treatment. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal reached the spot, inspected the scene and took stock of the situation. The field unit conducted a detailed inspection and collected important evidence. A case has been registered against both under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is going on, police said.
