The services of radiotherapy will soon be available for cancer patients in the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital. The State government has provided a modern radiotherapy machine to the hospital which will soon be installed.
Radiotherapy is one of the most important and effective methods of cancer treatment. In it the cancer cells are destroyed with the help of radiation.
On the orders of the director of the Medical Education Department, the Principal of GDMC, Dr Geeta Jain has started the process of installation of the radiotherapy machine in the hospital. Jain said that the new machine will help the GDMC hospital to establish a prominent centre of treatment of cancer.
Once operational, the machine will help in increasing the capacity of the hospital in treatment of cancer.
In the first phase the facility of brachytherapy is being developed in the hospital which is considered an advanced and most effective technique of radiotherapy. In this the radiation source is established inside or very near the tumour which helps in making the treatment more targeted. The brachytherapy has less side effects and it causes minimal damage to the healthy tissues. The duration of treatment is also less in this type of treatment. According to experts this technique is more effective in treatment of cervical, prostate and breast cancers. The head of department of Onchoradiology department of GDMC, Dr Daulat Singh said that the latest facility will help in increasing the quality of education and save time and money of patients.
