MANSI BHAMBRI/Dehradun
Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) has reported that 14 water supply schemes have been affected from July 1 to July 7. It is pertinent to mention here that during the monsoon season the water supply schemes get damaged due to heavy rainfall, landslides and cloudbursts, among other issues. With the onset of the monsoon season, damage to water supply schemes has also begun.
Providing an update on the status of the affected water supply schemes, chief general secretary at the UJS, DK Singh, stated that 14 schemes have been reported damaged as of July 7, from July 1. Of these, eight schemes are located in the Pauri district and six in Tehri, which were damaged. The damage has primarily been caused by heavy rainfall, but temporary repairs have been made using concerned pipes. He said that the department stocks up on temporary repair materials in advance, ensuring they are prepared for this monsoon season. Additionally, in areas where water supply schemes have been damaged, water tankers are provided as an alternative supply method. The department has about 86 water tankers available, with additional units rented as needed, he said.
Regarding the preparations for the monsoon season in 2026, Singh informed that necessary materials have been stockpiled and instructions have been issued to officials. A total of 280 kilometres of SFP pipes have been prepared for temporary restoration of affected water supply schemes, along with approximately 200 kilometres of GI pipes for permanent restoration. Officials have been instructed to remain vigilant and on call throughout the monsoon season.
