Residents adapt in the kitchen amid gas cylinder shortage

Doon residents are increasingly concerned about the shortage of LPG cylinders, despite the authorities’ assurances of sufficient stock. Many have adapted their cooking habits, now opting to prepare one meal a day that lasts throughout the day instead of the usual two or three meals. They opined that while officials provide reassurances, the reality on the ground is often different. To prevent further shortages, some residents have chosen to reduce or even stop using gas cylinders at home.

Local resident Vanshika Jena shared that she used to cook three meals a day- breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, due to the potential shortage of LPG cylinders, she has adjusted her approach. Now, when she cooks, she prepares larger quantities to cover multiple meals. For example, if she makes Dal Chawal for lunch, she increases the portion size to last for dinner as well. This method has helped reduce her cooking gas consumption at home, she said.

“Due to the anticipation of a shortage of LPG cylinders, the queues for refills have increased, forcing me to return home multiple times without a cylinder. To manage the limited gas at home, I have cut back on unnecessary cooking and opted to prepare one meal that can meet the needs for the entire day,” housewife Manisha Verma said.

Many other residents have expressed similar concerns and have also reduced their usage of gas cylinders. In addition, several have turned to induction cooking as an alternative. Ayush Chaturvedi said that despite the authorities’ reassurances, he believes that the ground reality is quite different. Considering this, he has advised his wife to use the induction stove more often for cooking instead of relying on the gas cylinder. He emphasised the importance of adapting to prevent a worsening situation in the future.
