The Dehradun mayor Saurabn Thaliyal inaugurated the Gandhi Park on Thursday after its redevelopment by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). Spread across about 58,952 square metres in the heart of Dehradun, the park’s redevelopment focuses on landscape restoration, environmental awareness and improved civic infrastructure to reinforce the park’s identity as a sustainable public space. The project was implemented under the direction of the mayor and municipal commissioner Namami Bansal with guidance from local councillor Rohan Chandel.
According to municipal officials, the works executed include land levelling and expansion of green zones along with plantation aimed at strengthening the ecological character of the park. Installations inspired by the “Save Trees Movement” have also been developed, drawing from the legacy of Gaura Devi and the historic Chipko Movement.
Several new visitor-oriented features have been added as part of the upgrade. These include the development of a central pedestrian avenue, bamboo landscape structures, decorative lighting and beautification of the main entrance gate. Pergolas, selfie points and installations developed under the “waste to wonder” concept have also been introduced to promote recycling awareness while improving the visual appeal of the public space.
