PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Heavy rains in Dehradun have caused sleepless nights for residents in areas along the Rispana river including Deepnagar, Rajivnagar and other localities. Residents and councillors from these areas have expressed concern over the increased flow of the Rispana river, which is affecting many houses and instilling fear among residents. On Monday, heavy rainfall was witnessed in Dehradun and nearby areas, leading to flooding in several homes. Additionally, alerts have been issued for heavy rainfall on August 12 and 13 in Dehradun and other districts, heightening concern and panic among residents.

The Deepnaagar ward councillor Dinesh Sati highlighted the rise in level of the Rispana river, which has directly impacted residents’ homes. He said that every year during the monsoon season, the residents of Deepnagar, located alongside the Rispana, suffer from flooding. He said that increased river flow during this time weakens the embankment, leading to breaches and flooding in nearby houses. Sati emphasised that this issue occurs annually, along with a similar issue having been encountered at Deepnagar this year, also during the monsoon season. He urged authorities to establish a stronger RCC embankment alongside the river to protect homes and residents’ lives.

Further, the Badrish Colony councillor Kamli Bhatt said that every year during the monsoon, areas adjacent to the Rispana such as Rajivnagar, experience flooding. She said that on due to heavy rain on Monday, the level of the river rose so considerably that it entered residents’ homes in Rajivnagar. Bhatt also said that residents have expressed fears of river water affecting their lives and homes, leading to sleepless nights. She even suggested that residents consider temporarily relocating during the monsoon season, she said.

Many residents have voiced their concerns, although some noted that past actions taken by authorities have helped prevent more severe flooding at their residences this year.  Resident of Bhagat Singh Colony, Sanjeev Kumar Gupta said that the flow of the Rispana has indeed increased this monsoon season.  However, he pointed out that residents have not faced as much trouble this year because authorities constructed embankments near Bhagat Singh Colony, which protected their homes from potential flooding.
