SC ruling on strays: Municipal commissioner, Kotdwar directs complete compliance

The municipal commissioner, Kotdwar convened a meeting with the senior officers of several departments here on Friday regarding the implementation of the Supreme Court’s November 7 ruling-Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No 5 of 2025- in the civic body’s jurisdictional area. Notably, the apex court had issued an interim order mandating the removal of stray dogs from institutional areas like schools, hospitals and railway stations. As per the order, these dogs must be sterilised, vaccinated and then relocated to shelters with the clear instruction that they are not to be released back into the same institutional areas.
The commissioner directed all the departments to ensure that the ruling is implemented completely. He informed that a number of places have been designated in the civic body area for arranging food and water for the stray dogs like Malviya Udyan, Sitabpur parking near Devi Mandir and Sibbu Nagar near Royal Enfield Showroom. Besides, a helpline number-7579476028-has been issued by the civic body for the people to inform if they face any stray dog -related problem and seek assistance. Moreover, a door-to-door campaign is being conducted to urge the people to take unsheltered strays as pets.
The commissioner further said that a shelter home is being constructed to keep the aggressive strays to be rescued by the civic body teams. He urged all concerned to make sure that campaigns are regularly conducted to keep the students safe from attacks from aggressive strays in line with the SC ruling.
