Extra rebate boosts early property tax collection

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Officials of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) said on Tuesday that they have seen a steady rise in early property tax payments after offering an additional rebate this financial year.

The civic body usually provides a 20 per cent rebate on property tax from April 1 to encourage timely payments. For 2026–27, it introduced an extra five per cent rebate for payments made within the initial period, prompting more residents to clear dues early. Tax superintendent Rahul Kainthola said that the response has been encouraging, with more taxpayers opting to pay in advance to avail the benefit. Unlike past years when collections picked up closer to deadlines, this year has seen a stronger start.  According to MCD data, around Rs 12 crore has been collected so far against a target of Rs 100 crore for the current financial year. Though still in the early phase, Kainthola said that the pace indicates that the additional rebate has helped accelerate revenue collection.

He also pointed to improved awareness among residents regarding timely tax payments, attributing it to better communication and outreach around the rebate scheme.

The corporation expects collections to gain further momentum in the coming weeks as more taxpayers utilise the rebate window. It has also clarified that the additional rebate will be available only during the first month of the financial year and will not be extended.

Residents have been urged to use both online and offline payment options to ensure the timely submission of dues. Kainthola added that early payments help improve financial planning and support the execution of development and maintenance works across the city.

In the previous financial year (2025–26), the MCD collected around Rs 72 crore and is aiming to raise Rs 100 crore through property tax this year.
