The specialist doctor crunch at the Government BD Pandey District Hospital continues to impact patients. With the hospital’s only orthopaedic surgeon on leave for two days and no effective replacement available, patients have faced significant inconvenience, raising serious questions about the hospital’s healthcare system.Notably, only one post of orthopaedic surgeon is sanctioned for the hospital.
The doctor has been on leave since Tuesday. The hospital management had assured of alternative arrangements, but the door of the orthopaedic surgeon’s room was found closed and the patients, who came for treatment, had to wait for a long time. Later, many of them had to return without consultation, while some had to consult other doctors. Over 50 patients were affected by this situation on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It is worth noting that the hospital is already grappling with a shortage of gynaecologists. When two gynaecologists remain on leave, pregnant women are unable to receive urgent care.
Asked about the specialist doctor crunch affecting healthcare, the hospital’s in-charge PMS, Dr Draupadi Garbiyal said that the orthopaedic surgeon was expected to return in a day or two and resume his services. “Meanwhile, efforts are being made to provide essential medical services through the available doctors to avoid inconvenience to the patients,” she stated.
