The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is moving ahead with the formation of dedicated horticulture experts to improve the maintenance and development of parks across the city. Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that the civic body has recently appointed horticulture expert Praveen Mathur and is in the process of building a complete team for the purpose.
According to Pandey, the corporation manages more than 100 parks and spends crores of rupees on their development and upkeep. However, park maintenance has so far been carried out without specialised horticulture experts. Routine cleaning and basic maintenance have continued but there has been no dedicated team to focus on plantation planning, landscaping, beautification and preservation of greenery.
He said that the responsibilities of the proposed horticulture experts include directing plantation drives, maintenance of lawns and flower beds, pruning of trees and plants and overall improvement of green spaces. The commissioner said that all parks under the corporation’s control will gradually be brought under the supervision of the new team.
Pandey stated that the horticulture experts will play an important role in enhancing greenery and ensuring better maintenance of public parks. The initiative will help strengthen the city’s green infrastructure and improve recreational spaces for residents, he added.
