Tributes paid to Chipko legend Gaura Devi on her birth centenary

The 100th birth anniversary of the pioneer of the Chipko movement, late Gaura Devi was celebrated in her native village, Raini enthusiastically through several programmes. Notably, by way of paying homage to Gaura Devi’s contribution to the cause of ecological conservation, the postal department released a stamp and a special cover. The State’s Forest minister, Subodh Uniyal released it.
On Saturday, a commemorative programme was organised by Nanda Devi National Park to mark the Chipko legend’s birth centenary. Mahila Mangal Dal members who came from several villages presented cultural programmes meant to arouse awareness on environment conservation.
Addressing the programme, Subodh Uniyal said that it could have been organised in Dehradun as well. “But to pay true homage to Gaura Devi, it is being held in her Karmabhoomi,” he added.
