No more spike breakers: Doon police shift gears

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun
The Dehradun traffic police have dropped their earlier plan to install spike speed breakers at key locations in the city, officials said on Monday. Senior officers are now mulling alternative measures to curb traffic violations and improve road safety.
The circle officer (traffic), Jagdish Chandra Pant said the new strategy would focus on major traffic violations, including wrong side driving, over-speeding, driving on one way routes, drunk driving and jumping red lights.
“About four traffic inspectors, eight personnel from the City Patrol Unit (CPU) and a team of around 20 ASI and SI rank officers would monitor traffic in Dehradun district. The traffic police are also preparing a new plan to take action against motorists who repeatedly violate traffic rules,” Pant added.
The traffic police data shows that enforcement intensified sharply in August this year. A total of 25,522 challans were issued in August 2026, compared with 15,842 in August 2025, marking a 62 per cent rise.
Challans for riding without a helmet more than doubled, rising 108 per cent from 2,385 to 4,943. Triple riding challans increased by 27 per cent, while drunk driving challans rose by eight per cent. Dangerous driving cases increased by 19 per cent and over speeding challans by one per cent.
Some violations, however, declined. Cases involving minors driving fell by seven per cent from 13 to 12 and challans for using mobile phones while driving dropped by 12 per cent, from 245 to 215.
From January to August, the traffic police issued 1,67,861 challans in 2026 more than the 1,29,544 issued during the same period in 2025. Wrong side driving challans rose 166 per cent and red light violations increased 80 per cent. Challans involving minors driving fell by 74 per cent during the period.
