UJS stocks material, directions issued for monsoon season

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) has stockpiled advance material and issued instructions to officials for the monsoon season. The UJS chief general manager DK Singh said they prepare every year ahead of monsoons. Similarly, this year too, all preparations have been geared up.

He stated that advanced material needed during monsoons, when any water supply scheme gets damaged, has been stocked. Singh informed that for both Kumaon and Garhwal regions, a total of 280 kilometres of SFP pipes have been stocked, while around 200 kilometres of GI pipes have been stocked. He said that SFP pipes are used for temporary restoration of water supply schemes that get affected, whereas GI pipes are used for permanent restoration.

Singh said that during monsoon season they generally carry out temporary restoration and after the season ends they undertake permanent restoration of schemes. However, at some places where temporary restoration is difficult during monsoons, they use GI pipes for permanent restoration there, he said.

The CGM further stated that they have also coordinated and identified assets including generators, tankers, tanks and others, and all these details have been shared with the district disaster office and State disaster office, so that during emergencies they don’t need to search for asset numbers and locations were already shared. Additionally, 31 control rooms have been set up across the State, where any individual can register complaints regarding water supply. UJS has provided toll-free numbers 1800-180-4100 and 1916 for complaints or support, Singh said.

He further informed that for the upcoming monsoon season, necessary directions have also been issued to concerned officials. He said concerned officials have been directed to audit pumping stations as chances of short circuits increase during monsoons. Apart from this, everyone has been directed to remain on call and alert during monsoon season, he said.

Notably, during monsoon season, due to cloudbursts, landslides and heavy rainfall, water supply schemes get affected. Commenting on the water supply schemes affected in 2025, Singh said that 3,374 water supply schemes were affected in the previous year.
