GDMC principal orders immediate fix for blood bank shortcomings

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The principal of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital Dr Geeta Jain has issued strict instructions to officers and employees for immediate improvements regarding issues related to low blood donation rates, the non-availability of blood for donors when needed and other systemic deficiencies. These directions were given during Jain’s recent review of the blood bank’s operations.

She emphasised that the blood bank is a critical life-saving service and any form of negligence or insensitivity will not be tolerated. She stressed the importance of ensuring that blood is available to thalassemia patients and abandoned or helpless individuals on humanitarian grounds, even if they are not donors. Additionally, Jain instructed that members of registered blood donor organisations should receive free blood if needed, subject to the approval of the medical superintendent. It is crucial that genuine blood donors do not experience any inconvenience when they require help.

The principal also highlighted that there have been complaints about blood not being available to donors when needed, which she described as a very serious issue. She warned that if this situation continues, strict action will be taken against those responsible. Jain expressed her strong objection to the lack of a blood donation facility available in the evening and directed that the blood bank should provide this service at all times to ensure patients can receive immediate help in emergencies.

Further, she clarified that blood should be dispensed to staff members in accordance with established rules and blood should not be released unnecessarily without a donation. She mandated the organisation of at least six to eight blood donation camps every month. Jain directed all concerned officials to ensure transparency, sensitivity and accountability in the blood bank’s operations, prioritising the interests of patients and blood donors above all else.
