Sports minister Rekha Arya stated that Uttarakhand is now gaining recognition on both national and global stages, not only for its tourism sector but also for winter sports. Arya visited the Himadri Ice Rink to encourage players participating in the 21st National Ice Skating Championship 2026 on Sunday. During her visit, she highlighted that the Himadri Ice Rink is India’s only modern world-class indoor ice rink, which is propelling the State’s sporting capabilities in a new direction.
“More than 500 young athletes from 21 States across the country are participating in the 21st National Ice Skating Championship. These athletes are showcasing their skills in Olympic-like events such as short track and figure skating. This event will not only promote ice skating across the nation but also position Uttarakhand as a State capable of hosting major sporting events,” she said.
The Sports minister also said that the State government continuously strives to secure the future of athletes. A four per cent horizontal reservation has been established for athletes seeking government jobs. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide out-of-turn employment for National Games medalists, allowing them to concentrate on their sports without worrying about their livelihoods. Arya stated that the government’s aim is to develop Uttarakhand into a modern sports hub alongside its traditional tourism.
