UPCL successful in significantly reducing transformer damage rate: MD

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The Uttarakhand Power Corporation (UPCL) has claimed that it has achieved a significant reduction in the distribution transformer (DT) damage rate in the past three years which has resulted in increased efficiency of the distribution network of the corporation.

The UPCL officials informed that the average DT damage rate was 5.75 per cent in FY 2022-23 which dropped to 3.91 per cent in FY 2024-25—representing an improvement of approximately 32 per cent. The Garhwal, Haridwar, Kumaon and Rudrapur zones have all recorded a consistent decline in damage rates. Furthermore, in FY 2025-26, this rate has further declined to 3.01 per cent by October 2025.

The managing director of UPCL, AK Yadav said that the reduction in transformer losses has directly benefited domestic consumers, commercial establishments and industrial units in the state. Fewer transformer failures have reduced the number of power outages, resulting in more stable voltage, fewer tripping and better quality power supply for consumers.

The MD further said that the UPCL has adopted several modern technological measures to reduce transformer damage. Through a Predictive Maintenance System, transformer load, oil quality and voltage profiles are continuously monitored, enabling early identification of potential faults.

Yadav said that the grievance redressal system has also been strengthened as part of consumer service improvements. UPCL’s 24×7 fault response teams, mobile app-based complaint monitoring system and call centre system enable teams to immediately reach the site of any transformer-related complaint and initiate restoration work. This has reduced outage duration and significantly increased consumer satisfaction, he claimed.
