The vice- chancellors of all the three universities located in Uttarakhand met online and decided that the student union elections would be held on the same day in all the three universities. The date of the election would be announced between September 15 and 17 after the administration and police put up adequate security arrangements in the colleges. The three universities are Kumaun University, Nainital; Soban Singh Jeena University, Almora and Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University, Tehri.
The VC, KU, Prof D S Rawat said that the student union elections would be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee in a peaceful, transparent and democratic manner. The VC of SSJ University, Prof Satpal Singh Bisht and VC, SSSU University, Prof N K Joshi, who were present at the virtual meeting, stressed on the same point.
The three VCs called upon the students to participate responsibly in the democratic process while maintaining the dignity of the academic environment. Earlier, the student union leaders of Kumaun University had demanded the date of student union elections be announced by August 20 failing which they had threatened stir in the DSB campus as well as in Ramnagar, Haldwani and Rudrapur colleges.
