In a surprise development, Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post, citing ‘health care, medical advice’ reason on Monday after presiding over the first day of the Monsoon Session as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar, 74, said in his letter to the President.

Dhankhar had been elected as India’s 14th Vice-President in August 2022 and had two years left for his term to complete.

The sudden resignation fueled speculations which commenced with the nominations of members to Upper House followed soon by a rejig of Governors of a few states.

Some analysts also view the VP’s resignation in the context of the RSS top leaders having affirmed that no one should cling to the constitutional post after reaching the age of 75 years. Still, things remain murky as one year is left for Dhankhar to attain that age.
