The Dehradun district administration provided financial help to 39 girls from economically weaker backgrounds under the Nanda-Sunanda project to support their education. During the 15th edition of the programme held at the collectorate auditorium on Saturday, Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal distributed cheques worth Rs 12.98 lakh to the girls and encouraged them to continue their studies.
Those provided financial assistance included 12 students of primary level, nine upper primary students, five secondary students, seven senior secondary students, five graduation level and one post graduation level student.
The project has been started to help girls whose education is affected due to financial problems or difficult family situations. Some of the girls and their mothers spoke about their struggles during the event. Some students said their fathers had passed away, while others said their mothers were struggling to support the family through low paying jobs. Due to poor financial conditions, it had become challenging to continue education, they said.
Bansal said that no talented child should be forced to stop studying because of monetary problems. He said the district administration is committed to supporting girls from weak economic backgrounds so that they can achieve their dreams. He also commended the officers and staff members working on the project.
Officials said that under the Nanda-Sunanda project, the district administration has so far helped 175 girls by providing financial assistance worth Rs 57 lakh for their education.
