State’s artists will get a chance to perform abroad, foreign artists will perform in India
The State’s Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj said that the rich folk traditions and ancient spiritual heritage of Uttarakhand is unique in India and across the world. He said this following the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the State governments to encourage cultural and educational exchanges with foreign nations.
Maharaj said that following the agreement, artists from Uttarakhand will be able to showcase their talent abroad while foreign artists will also be able to do the same in India. He said that the ICCR wants to cooperate with the State governments for encouraging Indian culture abroad and cultural exchange, which is a historic step. “Since ancient times, the land of Uttarakhand has been a centre for Indian philosophy, spiritualism, religion and culture in addition to having a rich tradition in literature and art. It is very important to ensure the preservation of the rich cultural heritage by encouraging music, dance, drama, folk music and dance and other aspects. Ancient archaeological sites and monuments should be protected and ancient documents and rare manuscripts must be preserved in a scientific manner,” said Maharaj. He said that the State’s Culture department is consistently working to preserve the historical, archaeological and cultural heritage of Uttarakhand. A total of 257 cultural troupes are currently registered with the department. He also informed about the various measures being taken by the State government for the welfare of veteran and performing artists.
