The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Tuesday has stepped up efforts to improve sanitation and prevent dengue and other vector-borne diseases, with Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey directing officials to ensure regular monitoring of garbage collection, fogging and anti-larval activities. A review meeting was held at the MCD premises to assess door-to-door garbage collection, fogging, anti-larval spraying, cleaning of drains, waterlogging-prone areas and action against open garbage dumping.
Pandey directed officials to ensure door-to-door garbage collection as per designated routes and timings and said that garbage should not remain accumulated in any area for long. He said that accountability should be fixed on the concerned agency in case of negligence.
He also instructed officials to regularly conduct fogging and anti-larval activities in vulnerable and identified areas. Waterlogging-prone locations should be identified and immediate cleaning and necessary action taken to prevent mosquito breeding. Area-wise monitoring and reporting of fogging and anti-larval activities was also ordered.
Pandey directed officials to ensure regular cleaning of drains and immediate lifting of waste generated during cleaning. Action as per rules should be taken against supervisors, sanitation inspectors and chief sanitation inspectors in case of negligence in door-to-door garbage collection. Officials were also directed to issue challans against people dumping garbage on roads, public places, vacant plots, drains and other prohibited locations. Frequently reported garbage dumping points should be identified and kept under special monitoring. Officials were asked to use available photo and video evidence to identify violators and take action as per rules.
Shops, hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments were directed to keep adequately sized dustbins outside their premises and hand over waste only to authorised garbage collection vehicles. Public awareness campaigns will also be conducted to encourage waste segregation and discourage littering.
Pandey directed sanitation workers of the MCD and associated agencies to work in prescribed uniforms to ensure proper identification, discipline and accountability. He also stressed the need to encourage employees who perform well. All Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) in the city should be identified and removed through necessary action. He added that regular cleaning and monitoring should be ensured at such locations to prevent garbage from accumulating again.
Pandey said that negligence in the sanitation system would not be tolerated and directed officials to regularly inspect their respective areas and monitor sanitation, garbage collection, fogging and anti-larval activities. He also appealed to residents to avoid dumping waste in the open or in drains, keep dustbins outside commercial premises and hand over garbage only to authorised collection vehicles. The chief municipal health officer Dr Anand Shukla, assistant municipal commissioner Rajbir Singh Chauhan, chief sanitation inspectors, sanitation inspectors and other officials were present at the meeting.
