Tuesday, 02 May 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The State meteorological centre has issued a warning (alert) regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/intense showers and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in the State on Tuesday. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts today.

It is worth mentioning that the first day of May in Uttarakhand was marked neither by the hot temperatures associated with this time of the year nor with the union demonstrations generally held to mark May Day. Rainy weather resulted in considerably cooler temperatures while also dampening the enthusiasm of elements prone to hold demonstrations on the first day of May. In the last fortnight of April the maximum temperature in Dehradun has dropped by about 18 degrees Celsius.

This trend is likely to continue in the plains and other parts of the State at least for the next few days. The State meteorological centre has forecast that light to moderate rain/thunderstorm/snowfall are likely to occur at most places in districts of the State today while snowfall is likely to occur at places situated at altitudes of 3,200 metres and above.

The provisional State capital Dehradun which experienced spells of rain during the daytime on Monday is forecast to experience generally cloudy skies with one to two spells of light to moderate rain/thunderstorm with lightning/gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 24 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius respectively on Tuesday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Monday were 19.9 degrees Celsius and 17.8 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 26.5 degrees Celsius and 18 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 10.1 degrees Celsius and 6.7 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 12 degrees Celsius and 9.2 degrees Celsius in New Tehri. Apart from snowfall in the higher reaches, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in various places with 44 millimetres in Gangotri, 37.5 millimetres in Chinyalisaud, 25 millimetres in Badkot, 22.5 millimetres in Chakrata, 18.5 millimetres in Mussoorie, 17.4 millimetres in Dehradun and 16 millimetres in Pauri.
